The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has filed a lawsuit to overturn the Canadian Government’s decision to return the Nord Stream turbines over to Russia.

Facing energy shortages in Europe, the Canadian Government had been facing pressure from Germany to return the turbine, which was being repaired in Canada since before the February 24 invasion.  Both the German and Canadian Governments recognized that this would be a violation of their own sanctions against Russia, however Germany had argued that by sending the turbine back to Russia, it would “remove Putin’s argument” that the energy shortages were only because of the lack of this specific turbine.

Andriy Futey, who was recently sanctioned and banned from Russia for life due to his outspoken activism against Russia’s aggression, told the Kyiv Post that, “The Ukrainian World Congress,” of which Mr. Futey is a leader, “is deeply disappointed by the decision to turn the turbines over to Russia… This is obviously plays to the interests of the terrorist-state. This means that Canada is helping to finance its war against Ukraine.”

Siemens, the corporation repairing the turbine in Canada, has previously run into problems with sanctions against Russia. In 2017, Siemens transported turbines to Russian-occupied Crimea in violation of then-existent sanctions. After a detailed investigation where numerous employees were questioned, a partner of Siemens was forced to pay a fine for violating the sanctions.

Austin said he had "not seen significant reporting" of North Korean troops being "actively engaged in combat" to date.

“We need to totally sanction Nord Stream, and this is part of the larger plan to shut down any, and all, energy operation that moves Russian energy to Europe. We will continue to strongly advocate for maintaining the strongest sanctions possible against the Nord Stream project,” said Futey.

However, Futey feels that the West, even after stopping the Nord Stream projects, has yet more work ahead of it, saying “we need to go further: We need to be closing down all ports so that Russia feels a deep pain for the illegal war they are waging against Ukraine. We are going to continue lobbying for further enhanced sanctions at all levels so that Russia is forced to discontinue this war.”

Futey noted that the “Ukrainian Congress Committee of America is working to promote further sanctions, now, to prevent Russia from being able to continue to wage war.”
